The Child Life Program at Children's Health
Celebrating over 40 years, the Child Life Department at Children’s Health continues to work alongside the medical staff to ensure a positive experience for our patients and families. Our goals align with the needs of those we work with daily in the hope of making life better for children. There are over 60 staff members in the Child Life Department which includes a number of different disciplines including child life specialists, child life assistants, music therapists, the Therapeutic Arts Program, and the Pet Therapy Program. There is also the Teddy Bear Clinic where teddy bears help children understand all aspects of their treatments and/or surgeries. All Child Life Specialists provide play opportunities at bedside as well as in the playroom setting. They also work to provide services to the whole family unit and not just the patient. Their goal is make sure parents, siblings, and patients all have an understanding of the plan of care. Child Life specialists are trained professionals with expertise in helping patients and their families. Armed with a strong background in child development and family systems, Child Life Specialists promote effective coping through play, preparation, education, and self-expression activities. They provide emotional support for families, and encourage optimum development of children facing a broad range of challenging experiences, particularly those related to healthcare and hospitalization. These specialists provide information, support and guidance to parents, siblings, and other family members. They also play a vital role in educating caregivers, administrators, and the general public about the needs of children under stress.
